A comprehensive, informative walkthrough of Harvest Moon (1996) with character introductions, trivia, tips and additional information.
Game Start
- Begin a new game and name your character:
- At the title screen, select "New Game".
- You'll be prompted to enter a name for your character. Use the on-screen keyboard to input a name of your choice.
- Watch the introductory cutscene:
- The game opens with a scene of your character arriving at the farm.
- The Mayor, a short, balding man with a mustache, greets you.
- He explains that this was your grandfather's farm and is now yours to restore.
- The Mayor challenges you to make the farm successful within 2.5 years (30 in-game months).
- If you fail, you'll have to return to the city
Initial Farm Setup (Spring 1-7, Year 1)
- Explore your farm:
- Use the D-pad to move your character around the farm.
- Your tiny house is where you'll sleep each night and save your game.
- The empty field is full of weeds (green patches), rocks (gray objects), and stumps (brown circular objects).
- The shipping bin is a large wooden box near your house where you'll place items to sell.
- Check your tools:
- Press Y to open your tool menu.
- You start with 5 essential tools:
a) Hoe: Used to till the soil to prepare for planting. Creates a 1x1 square of tilled soil.
b) Axe: Used for cutting stumps. It takes multiple strikes to remove a stump.
c) Hammer: Used for breaking rocks. It also takes various strikes per rock.
d) Watering Can: Used for watering crops. Waters a 1x1 square at a time.
e) Sickle: Used for cutting grass and weeds. Clears a 3x3 area with each swing.
Start by clearing a small area near your house for your first crops. This saves time and energy when watering and harvesting.
- Clear your field:
- Equip the sickle and use it on weeds. Press B to swing the sickle.
- Equip the axe and use it on stumps. It takes multiple strikes to remove each stump.
- Equip the hammer and use it on rocks. Like stumps, rocks take numerous hits to break.
- Till the cleared soil:
- Equip the hoe and use it on the cleared ground to create tilled soil ready for planting.
